Last night I experienced the most extraordinary musical performance I have ever witnessed. I've been a fan over the years but nothing could have prepared me for what I saw and heard. Richard Thompson is untouchable. As a singer of great depth and richness and that guitar playing was just, well...jawdropping. A night and a talent I will never forget. Thanks mate. Come back to Oz soon. |

Hello from a Brit now resident in Brisbane, second time I have seen you here, please keep coming back ! It was a great show and thank you for taking the time to sign the photo of my little girl playing her guitar to your Austin DVD, the photo is a particular favourite of mine, it is very special now. As a brit living in the wonderful city of Melbourne can I say that its a joy to see RT live down here. I've seen shows both solo and group based going well back into the 1980s and for me this was the most commanding performance I've had the pleasure to hear. Great depth and range vocally, immaculate awesome guitar playing and a set list that couldn't be bettered. Thank you so much.

I trawled the net for reviews of Richard's Australian concerts, particularly the Melbourne one I attended. Two years ago, the newspapers were overflowing with articles about Richard, spanning full page features on him before his concerts. Two papers carried reviews of the Melbourne concert. This year ....... one miserable promo style article in The Australian. Makes me want to cancel my subsriptions in disgust. Can't our journos recognise genius? Or is this a sign of a major shutdown of the arts by our media moguls? Whatever, while RT remains obscure, I'll have no problem securing great concert tickets ..... WHEN he comes next time. RT provides the perfect antidote to Melbourne life - it's so dull. And he is everything dull isn't. Thanks for your site. |

I counted down the number of sleeps till RT's concert from about 60 days prior. With seats in the middle of the second row, after last time seeing him from upback, I was looking forward to watching Richards guitar work. I spent hours pondering the likely opening number, and have to admit that 'I misunderstood' was one of 5 or so shortlisted. He sang one song that I did not recognise, in response to a request, and at one point hummed the words - the only song on which he was lyrically rusty. What was that song? As with so many of RT's obscure songs, it was a gem. I wish that RT had a set list site so that his adoring fans could more accurately reminisce concerts past. That's for helping to recharge my middle-aged batteries and illuminating life's journey with your tunes.
On behalf of all Melbournites, I apologise to RT for the crass remark that followed RT's comment on parting company with Fairport for musical reasons. 'What about your wife?' from just behind me was critically received by all those seated around the questioner. The question silenced the audience for quite some time. After the terrific rapour established with RT, the audience seemed afraid to call out again, in case another thoughtless remark be made by this person. Really, I felt the incident highlighted the genuine devotion felt for RT by his fans, in that nobody wanted to impart any vibes other than those reflecting their awe and gratitude for RT's presence. I know that Iwas feeling intensively protective of both Richard and the ambience. Among many highlights, I loved RT's live versions of 'Let it blow', 'Crazy man Michael' and 'Walking on a wire'. Many other favourites sounded fresh in new arrangements. I hope that RT looks after himself so that he can tour for many years to come. |

The Melbourne concert was just what I've always wanted - you shouldn't have. I saw people there that I hadn't seen for so long that I had no idea who they were.
I was disappointed, but perhaps I understood, when I asked for 'I Still Dream' and you said, "No, not that one".
My partner, however, was unforgiving and sulkily declined to see you the following weekend in Port Fairy. She was cross with me too for not saying "Well, 'Keep Your Distance' then." But I think you'd heard enough from us. Not so me from you in Melbourne though, despite two hours of sustained splendour from you. On your own, when loud you sounded bigger and better than the band on the DVDs; when quieter you were exquisitely fine and sweet. Two hours? - after two songs I was satisfied. The rest was manna. A genenerous performance which I think you noticed was greatly loved by everyone there.Thank you, and come back soon. Bring electric guitars and a band, even though you don't need one - just for love. (Have you ever brought a band to Australia? Hmmm?)
Best concert I've ever been to.
Miraculous playing.
Good night. |

RT's concert at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney last night (8/3/6) was fanmazing. I brought some RT-unfamiliar friends who loved it. The songs, sound and guitar were amazing. I was fascinated by the subtlety of his effects. He played a whole swag of new and old tunes. We loved Beeswing, I Want to See the Bright Lights, Bathsheeba's Smile, When the Spell is Broken, Wall of Death (which I yelled out for 2 years ago in Byron Bay - thanks for getting round to it), a new one about loving smart women (my wife seemed impressed by that), and many more. His stage manner was as usual prickly and ironic: he seemed to congratulate us for recognising songs, and pointed out when we didn't. We got three sets of double encores, so left feeling pretty satisfied.
Thanks, and have a good time in Australia |

I saw Richard at the Enmore recently and even though my body was in pain from sitting for 3 hours, my soul was smiling and my eyes were crying with joy. |

RT and ST, thanks for a fabulous gig at The Enmore this week. Disappointing attendance numbers but be assured that you lifted our night beyond the norm ? we always find that it?s worth the wait between experiences. Of special significance was Crazy Man Michael ? thanks a bunch for playing that one, just a shimmering delight, fair carried me orf, it did. Keep on coming back to see us ? you are very highly valued. Hope the rest of the Aus tour went well, especially those little festivals at Katoomba and Port Fairy. New Zealand next time, too, please? |
