"Great night at Cambridge, thankyou! " |
"Saw you live at the Cambridge Corn Exchange. Fantastic, bloody fantastic!! I have never known anyone or seen anyone play the guitar like that, it was pure genius. My girlfriend saw you as well and she said you were like an angel from folk heaven. We shall treasure this as a landmark in or lives forever. Many thanks for a very very fine evening of music and entertainment. " |
As a guitar player I heard so much about Richard Thompson, but never heard any of his music ( how sad ! ). I saw him at the Corn Exchange in Cambridge on the 17th May 2004 and was absolutely amazed. A fantastic guitar player, an awesome singer and beautiful songwriter, I felt so privilleged to have been there. |

No words for how unbelievably brilliant Richard Thompson was in Aberdeen. |
Just been converted at the live gig in Aberdeen. Wonderful musicianship. Got there through Fairport. Now I've got lots of CD's to find and enjoy! |

Basingstoke
21/5/04
"Have recently rediscovered Richard (must have seen and heard him in the 70's). Solo at Basingstoke last week was amazing, thank you. " |
"I saw Richard perform solo at the Anvil, Basingstoke, on Friday 21st May. I had seen him 'live' three times before, but I think this was the most impressive performance. Please release a CD / DVD of one of the performances of his latest tour. Thank you. " |
"My better half and myself made the return trip to the Anvil, Basingstoke last night and were, as we expected, astounded again by what we saw. What can you get for £17 in Basingstoke? Half a tank of petrol, a take-away for two, a bus ticket to somewhere nice or two hours of bliss. How does he do it? Even the ladies who show you to your seats seemed to take notice. ""Smiffy's Glass Eye"" alone was worth ten times the price of admission. ""Ducknapped"" on the car stereo made the long journey home a pleasure, rather than an ordeal, and rouded off a beautiful evening. A thousand thanks to Richard and we can't wait for Exeter, Salisbury and Trowbridge. " |
I went to Basingstoke on Friday and wanted to say that it was one of the best gigs I've been to in a very long time. I don't think I've missed a UK tour in the last 11 years and this was way up the top of the list.
Long may it continue. |
From Naples, Italy, to Basingstoke just to see the concert of our Master! Thanks Richard for your great performance and kindness in receiving us after the show!
A wonderful night to remember untill the next concert! |

Buxton
26/5/04
"At Buxton tonight he jokingly self deprecated that he was a rock dinosaur .......... having seen /listened to such talent and perfect craft , tell him no dinosaur, because he evolves too fast and stays ahead of the rest ....and will continue to do so because he always has the fire and sensitivity in his blood that makes him unique and timeless.' Thank you for the concert......it was such a priviledge to witness and enjoy. " |
What can I say? The gig at Buxton Opera House was the best one of yours I've ever seen, and I've seen some great ones. A wonderful evening - I'm still tinglng three days later. We should have bowed to you, not vice-versa. Thank you. |
The gig at Buxton Opera House was superb. Great to hear the master performing solo... there is so much in such a magnificent couple of hours that a band is unnecessary. Someone's comment on the website that 'all we needed was to crank up the level', or some similar comment, certainly does not apply to my feelings, nor that of many others in the audience. More solo tours please!!! The magic was all there in fingers, voice, and deeply musical and moving songs. |

York

"Fantastic gig at the Royal Opera House in York last night, even up in the 'gods' with no leg room." |
Saw you at york opera house last night. Awesome, no other words for it.
Cheers. |
I saw the York Gig in the UK. RT was well up to form, nice to see some of the older material getting an airing and set me thinking how RT has not yet got the recognition he deserves as a songwriter. Was it ever the same! How can he play a bass line and the melody at the same time on such fast tunes, I've never worked that one out since Fairports early days. |
Manchester
28/5/04
Most off-the-cuff RT show I've ever seen - filled many requests - even for songs he couldn't remember the words from. PA sound was a bit compressed I thought. Some great guitar - please take the enthusing as read. Thanks. |
Greatly enjoyed the Manchester concert. Highlights were Vincent Black Lightning, Down Where the Drunkards Roll, Crazy Man Michael and Substitute - nice venue, good view and good sound. |
Let me be the first! Just come from the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester. Awesome, Richard. So good to see you playing alone for the first time since Celtschmertz. My only complaint - there were so many tunes you didn't play, but where was 'Tear Stained Letter'? Thanks for a fabulous evening. |
Thanks for a superb set at Manchesters Bridgewater Hall last night, your guitar playing was spellbinding. Looking forward to seeing you play again in the NW again soon. Kind Regards |
I went to see Richard Thompson in York on Thursday and then last night in Manchester (I can't keep away), i thought both perfromances were absolutely brilliant by both Richard Thompson and Jim Moray. I'd just like to say thank you for playing beeswing and i feel so good - my two all time favourites. No 'my daddy is a mummy' though! |
Fantastic gig as usual at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester 28th May. RT, you really are like a fine red wine, you get better and better with time. God knows how many times I have had the good fortune to come and watch you now but I feel honoured and priveleged to have done so. Thank you for the joy and happiness that you and your music have brought to my life. By the way, what happened during "Devonside", have you ever forgotten the words before? |
Saw RT in Manchester - enjoyed every song and the brilliant playing ! Richard seems to improve from concert to concert - and his singing is absolutely great as well (I guess this was my 15th concert in ca. 30 years - so I was never disappointed !) Keep on playing this great stuff ! |
Caught Richard in Manchester last week. Fantastic set, full of surprises. Personally I thought it was better for not including Tear Stained Letter and Al Bowlly. Is Richard planning any more 1000 years in the UK? especially outside London? |
Went to Manchester concert to see and listen to RTs music for the first time. Absolutely brilliant! Looking forward to the next concert. |
Exeter
30/5/04 |
Absolutely fantastic - two hours of perfection. Richard just keeps getting
better and better. We have followed him for over 24 years and each
time we see him we are spellbound. Tonight's venue - the Riverside was
excellent as it was small and felt very intimate compared to many of the
larger theatres.
Thank you Richard. |
Thanks for a brilliant concert in Exeter last night. Truly superb. |
I went to my first RT gig last night at the Riverside Exeter and it was awesome. RT played most of the classics, including my favourites, 1952 Vincent,Cooksferry Queen, and a very powerful Crawl Back. There was also a tribute to the Fairport days with Crazy Man Michael.
Mr T's guitar playing is phenomenal and it was a privilige to witness it in person. Thanks for a fantastic night out. I'm now looking forward to watching the BBC 4 programme on Friday 4th June. |
Saw Richard tonight in Exeter and was amazed to see how many souls one person can fill with the magic of music/song... fantastic and a really warm thank you! |
I have seen Richard live many times.I saw him last night in Exeter. He has always been a genius but he just keeps on getting better and his voice is as impressive now as his often transcendental guitar playing.I love his sense of humour. |
Caught your show in Exeter on Sunday. FANTASTIC. A privaledge to meet you backstage Richard. Thank you and hurry back to the westcountry. |
Salisbury
01/6/04 |
Got back last night from Exeter and Salisbury, exhausted but happy. Every time we see Richard, we can't imagine him being able to equal, never mind surpass, the breath-taking quality of his performances but he always raises live music to levels which other, more celebrated, artists could only dream of. If people like Cliff Richard and Paul McCartney can be knighted for what they do, Richard should be made Lord Thompson of Cooksferry immediately. |
Last night's gig at Salisbury was wonderful, fantastic, seminal. Beeswing (at my request!) was so beautiful. Thank you, Richard. Please ask Richard to vary his pose so that those seated stage left can see his fingerwork! He always wears his Lowden on his right hip so you have to be on the left half of the audience to see the picking. And I wanna see that picking. |
What a great concert at Salisbury! As superlative as one's come to expect - and Richard makes it look so effortless. I was thoroughly embarrassed by my wife's having written to RT requesting Push and Shove as a (56th) Birthday treat for me. Honest, Guv, I knew nothing about it! But just so's you know - it is a genuine favourite of mine, has been since I first heard it - and I'll keep on requesting its revival for aesthetic reasons, and not (as it might seem!) just to annoy the maestro. In fact, if Richard is planning more of his retrospective shows, maybe he could slot P&S into one of them and see what response it gets...PS Damned catchy, that Watch me go! And even if I didn't get my request, it was fantastic to hear an acoustic Sibella. |

Derby
02/6/04 |
Nice to see Richard 'back on the Derby beat' last night. |
Saw Richard play Derby recently and thought he was the beesknees as well as the beeswing. |
Derby - Best gig I have been to in years, great mix of old and new stuff.Best gig I have been to in years, great mix of old and new stuff. |
Thanks for such a wonderful show last Wednesday 2 June,
2004 at Derby. I don't recall you ever appearing in my home
town before, so it was a real privilege to see you there. Please play again in Derby together with Danny T., Pete Zorn and the rest of your band ! Thanks a million ! |
Buxtin was simply wonderful and RT in operatic mode was AWESOME-so good took the family to Bridgwater side and they insisted on packing the ol kit bag and hitching to Derby-all 3 concerts were magical-come back soon! |
Trowbridge
25/7/04 |
A huge Sunday evening crowd packed the main marquee and outside area for Richard's appearance. He came on to a great roar from the audience and launched into an hour-long set of old and new songs. I saw RT at Tunbridge Wells recently and he was fantastic in the intimate atmosphere of a small theatre. Here he was playing to thousands of festival fans, so the songs kept coming with shorter intros and less banter. Every song was a treat, Richards playing and singing were powerful and captivating. The hour went by too fast. Come to Cropredy Richard, our festivals need you. Thanks for two classic gigs in two months. |
Saw him at Trowbridge Pump - fantastic/ need to see Richard again in the UK asap |
Abingdon
26/7/04 |
Just to say what a fantastic gig last night in Abingdon (26/07/04)I introduced a couple of people to Richards music and this was their first experience of him live and I know they had a great time (they just want to know where the second guitarist was hidden!) i know that 90 people had a great time so thank you very much!!! |
Saw RT at Abingdon last night - thanks Richard, a stunning concert, brilliant. Any chance of a copy of the set list with the tunings shown? I could tell the main ones (standard, CGDGBE, some DADGAD, dropped D) but couldn't always remember the tuning for each song. I play myself (reasonably good) and would love to try out some of these. |
I was lucky enough to get to hear about the concert in Abingdon, and even more lucky to get a ticket - it was the best RT set I have attended, by some considerable margin. Well done! Thanks! The venue was perfect and I don't think I have seen such an enthusiastic crowd before, not even at your appearance at Cropredy a few years back. It was great to be close enough to be able to see how you were playing. |
