Superb last night of tour in Oxford - thanks
The wifelette and I just saw Richard at the New Theatre in Oxford (UK) last night (7 Feb '09).
Great! Well worth slipping on the ice to get there!
(A birthday treat for us both.)
Salisbury, UK 2/5/09
Saw Richard last night 5 Feb 2009 at Salisbury-excellent entertainment!
Saw RT last night in salisbury. Lovely concert. Great fun!
Northampton, UK 2/4/09
I have been watching bands all of my life, from Yes to the Young Knives (a chronological gap rather than alphabetical). I thought the write up for the 1000 Years show sounded interesting so I got a ticket. I did not expect much, but of the thousands of bands I have seen, the show at Northampton was one of the best ever. A fantastic evening, quite special.
London, UK 2/3/09
1000 years of music - 3 Feb 09
A brilliant concert but it would have been nice to have had a Buddy holly number on the 50th anniversary of his death.
me and my wife are regular RT concert goers, for many years. At Barbican 3/2/9 and as always RT(& girls)brilliant!pleez put us on mail list.
Canterbury, UK 2/1/09
Went to 1/2/09 Canterbury concert - the blurb looked mildly interesting in the theatre agvance prog. Absolutely knocked out - FANTASTIC.
loved the 1000 years concert i saw last night. The first half was especially wonderful. judith owen was fab.
Brighton, UK 1/31/09
Just been to see RT in Brighton-wonderful concert.
Just seen the show in Brighton - fantastic - everything we had expected and more - standing ovation at the end. Pity no Britney but we got jokes, from RT, astounding!
Bristol, UK 1/30/09
Fantastic show on Friday at the Colston Hall Bristol. Truly entertaining!
Came to see a thousand years of popular music in Bristol at colston hall on Friday and thought it was fantastic. We all thoroughly enjoyed the massive variety of songs and will probably come to see it again in Salisbury on Thursday.
p.s-are you doing any more concerts soon and is there anywhere where I can get the lyrics and chords for the songs?
Birmingham, UK 1/29/09
This was a totally fab concert! The 1000 Years of Popular Music concept is brilliant and groundbreaking. (I'm sorry that a few of your other correspondents seem far too set in the mould and unable to appreciate this). It provides an excellent showcase for Richard's supreb musical versatility as well as being very interesting and entertaining in its own right. Superb performances by all concerned, Judith magnificent sharing the lead vocals and on piano and Debra an excellent percussionist and great on backing vocals. Stage presentation simple but both very attractive and effective with the changing projected images on the backdrop. Beautifully clear, crisp lighting but yet with a degree of sunbtlety and warmth. Sound quality in Birmingham Town Hall top rate. Congratulations to all concerned! Take this as being a 5-star review!!!!! Also great to see Richrad & Judith in the foyer after signing CDs. We really enjoyed being able to chat with you both! Best wishes for the rest of the tour.
Wimbledon, UK 1/27/09
I saw 1000 years twice; Basingstoke and Wimbledon, and I thought it was absolutely wonderful
I was one of the many who enjoyed your concert in Wimbledon this week, 1000 years of popular music.
Cardiff, Wales, UK 1/26/09
Great concert in Cardiff. Great combination with other artists
Milton, UK 1/25/09
Saw the "1,000 Years" show at Milton Keynes: stunning musicianship and singing, as ever. Great version of See My Friends, and now I have to try and learn Friday On My Mind...will report back next year!
Milton Keynes gig - Just to say how much I enjoyed the gig last night. Difficult to do justice to 1000 years of popular music in an evening, and no doubt everyone has their own opinions about what could have been included, but I thought the choice was very eclectic, and included some real gems. Break a leg.
My wife and I attended your recent concert at MK theatre and generally enjoyed the show, however the second half was spoiled by the excessive
volume - I found I could enjoy and indeed hear the words more clearly with my fingers stuffed in my ears - next time I'll bring my ear defenders! I'm sure that with the modern acoustics you could have been heard just as well with no amplification at all, or perhaps standing back from the mike would help!
Gateshead, UK 1/23/09
Always magical. Gateshead '1000 years' - beyond superlative. I just didn't want the concert to end - and this from a woman struggling to overcome panic attacks in crowded places!
Saw 1000 years, fantastic!
Richard Thompson is my favourite performer bar none. 1000 Years of Popular Music is the biggest load of tosh I've ever had the misfortune to sit through. Please don't bring this show to Gateshead again - stick to what you're good at.
Perth, Scotland 1/22/09
Perth was even that bit better from centre front row. I even got to say hello to The Big Man after the gig, and he complemented me on my singing! But oh, the shame of it, I started out speaking to Richard as a normal human being and within two minutes became a nervous wreck talking gibberish. The excitement at meeting my Hero was too much. My wife was very supportive, but I think she's saving the good stuff to hit me with in the morning. And at my age too. Please apologise to Richard. Next time I'll keep the head down and mumble.
Great gig in Perth on 22 Jan. Sadly on the DVD you are rude about Saints, our football team, and didn't play the song (only a wee bit). We are currently top of the first division and hope to be promoted for the third time to the premiership. We have the best record there other than Rangers and Celtic! Hope you had a good Hogmany in Towie Barclay - Keep on rocking for 1000 years!
Glasgow, Scotland 1/21/09
Ta for a great gig at the GRCH last week. If your kid is even half as good this week it'll be good too.
Hello there Mr. Beekeeper. Would be nice to think that I'm emailing Mr. Thompson directly, however I'm aware that's very unlikely to be the case, quelle shame. Went to see you/him in Glasgow a few nights ago and, excuse the ancient medievil Italian, but it was fucking magical. P.S: Is Judith Red Molly? She's beautiful.
Was at the Celtic Connections show in Glasgow recently. Just wanted to say thanks. Cheers
Hi! I'll assume I'm addressing Richard Thompson! A dissenting voice from Glasgow, I’m sorry to say. I’ve been following your career since 1970 and greatly admire your work – so often really excellent. As recently as 2 years ago (I think) you played what my friends and I felt was one of your best ever appearances in Glasgow, you with just Danny Thompson on bass. Indeed, one of the best ever concerts I’ve been to. Ironically, one of my buddies has never returned because he wanted to remember you with that peak! A bit perverse methinks, but…October 2007 you were back in Glasgow with an electric show that for me was just too loud. I’d struggled with your volume before, but I figure that’s just me getting on a bit! But I have never before struggled with your taste. My usual buddies decided not to go to 1,000 years, having heard the CD and watched the DVD and found Judith Owen’s contributions too challenging, visually and aurally. So did I - but I thought that, on balance this would be okay. I took a pal, new to your music, to 1,000 years. She didn’t like the show very much at all, and I struggled a lot. And what we couldn’t get past was the very, very bad rendition of Dido’s Lament – a beautiful, haunting masterpiece that was sung by Judith Owen in what seemed an appalling cod opera voice. Was it meant to be funny? The CD/DVD gave fair warning that Night and Day and Cry me a River would be sung badly, and that we would be treated to self-indulgent visuals along the way, but Dido’s Lament was simply awful. (Debra Dobkin is excellent – and a preferable singer too). Since you’ve been receiving good reviews in the press and enthusiastic audience responses, we may be out on a limb on this one (though there was a telling comment in one review I read, perhaps the Guardian , that JO sang “to varying effect”), but you should know that some of us out here are struggling. A shame too to omit Bonnie St Johnstone – the standout track on the CD? There were some fine bits, but overall a disappointment. Nonetheless, kind regards
at the gig in the concert hall in glasgow, really enjoyed the first part of the show, the second was even better.judith owens voice was amazing and of course the guitarist was oustanding as ever. don't leave it another 15months until you return tae bonnie scotland.
A crackin' little show, as Wallace would no doubt say to Gromit, and he'd be right. Viewed from the front row but way over to Richard's right, and now with a permanent crick in the neck, this was a thoroughly enjoyable evening, all three players on top form. Judith's voice especially was the best I've heard from her, and such a dancing tease! Debra's drumming was well judged for each song required of her. You know, they're almost like a 60's/70's Power Trio, yet not an electric guitar in sight. Richard was clearly enjoying himself, beaming all night long, and the encores ( I won't mention titles if you have still to attend) were a real treat, and were crying out for a standing venue so we could have a boogie. Fingers are as nimble as ever, and from my angle it was perfect to see the styles and movement across the strings. I wish he wouldn't make it look so easy, because I've tried, and it's not. I will make mention for two songs, one played and one not; firstly, "See My Friends", the old Kinks number, was superb, with brilliant backing from Judith's keyboards. The sound was just really, really BIG. The only down note? Secondly, and sadly for me, no "Legal Matter" or Who Medley. Always leave 'em wanting more, eh Richard? Maybe I'll be lucky tomorrow night in Perth, who knows? Probably Mr Thompson. Thanks to Richard, Judith and Debra, for another memorable and splendid evening. And all at reasonable prices too!
High Wycombe, UK 1/19/09
Richard and girls, Thanks for a great time at wycombe swan. Thanks for signing set list. see u again
Just seen your show at the Wycombe Swan and was totally blown away at your music and with both of the ladies. Could Debra drum in our band "Sticky Jack" as our drummer is Deaf and his metronome has bust...
A truly wonderful evening with a first half consisting mostly of works totally new to any of the audience, I imagine; it was followed by a second half typically eclectic and sometimes, in the case of Abba, eccentric and in one instance, with regards to Ray Davies, just a little perverse.. but that's my opinion. Any musician who can encompass the Easybeats and the Korgis without batting an eyelid deserves respect, as too do the two very fine supporting artistes. May I apologise to all three of them for the lack of audience response during the Beatles medley during the encore, but it was Wycombe on a Monday... anyway I'm from Marlow!
Great performance last night in High Wycombe.
Thank you Richard.
Just seen the 1000 years show at HW - excellent stuff !!
Salford, UK 1/18/09
Loved the show - been waiting to see it for years now.
Just been to see 1000 years of popular music at the Lowery salford.RT has to be one of the most versatile folk/rock artists ever to grace a stage, another masterpiece, cant wait for his next offering.
Another astounding show, the 1000 years at Salford Lowry last night! Any chance of your tunings and chords/tab for Shenandoah and also thanks for a beuatiful version of Everybodys Gotta Learn Sometime (any chance of your chords and tuning for that too)? I'll leave it there. Thanks for the music!

London, UK 1/15/09
Great concert at the Barbican last week. And good to hear some British pop classics given the Thompson treatment. Thank you for a great night out.
I saw "1000 years of popular music" on 15 January 2009. It was fantastic! I really hope you release this tour on CD/DVD too.
Richard, saw you at the Barbican (15 Jan), just loved it, Judith Owen and Debra Dobkin were fantastic. My question is about the thematic images that flashed up on the giant video screen. Do you leave the 'arty' bit to someone else or do you have some/total input? The photo of the boy miners shown during the 'Blackleg Miners', such a simply taken photo but haunting nevertheless. Had the same effect on my sister.
Basingstoke, UK 1/14/09
Good evening. I went to see Richards gig in Basingstoke earlier this week. He was great, it was great. Music choice fab-notwithstanding he could of played "Autopsy"-we would of all of loved it- Tell him. Its a Sandy Denny tune and its within the last 100 years. Its the best guitar solo of all time-and Richard played it. I was in hope right to the end. Best thing I have seen this year! No really, excellent. Its funny, they played Henry Purcell, (Judith was excellent) which I love anyway. Judith said England's greatest composer, and I said "no its Ray Davies" who writes about the England I relate too. And later Richard played "See my friends" and more or less said the same thing. I also wondered why he missed the Beatles, although the Easybeats were a great choice-low and behold, he came back to play them - little devil. Earlier in the day, my 14 year old daughter and I (I am an old dad with a huge vinyl collection) were talking about the 8 tracks we would take to our Desert Island. I said I would have to choose a Beatles track. And it would have to be "There's a Place" and Richard played it. Top man.
